Registration and Costs

Winter 2024 registrations have now closed. Late registrations are only possible if there is a vacancy in a team. Please contact us on info@southerncrossbasketball.net to check availability and provide your name, year of birth and gender.  We would be particularly interested to hear from you (girl or boy) if you were born 2006-2008 (regardless of skill level!)

More information about the winter 2024 season is available in our FAQ sheet. This should answer most of your questions including costs, season details and game times but if you need more information, please contact us at info@southerncrossbasketball.net

Don’t worry if you have missed out on the winter season this time, the summer season starts up again in term 4 of 2024 and we’ll be taking new registrations in the middle of term 3 for this season.  Our website will be updated as soon as information comes to hand.

Information for new players

We welcome new players with or without experience. If you missed trials and haven’t played basketball before, you will simply be placed in an entry level team. If you are a new player with previous basketball experience, let us know so we can make sure you are placed in the right team.

Note if you are coming from another Club, the PlayHQ system will require you to submit a transfer before you can complete your registration. Please let the Club know in such cases (info@southerncrossbasketball.net) so we can reserve a place in a team for you.

There is no minimum age to play basketball. We have had very keen players who are 5 and 6 years old in the under 10 age group but generally players who are 7 years or older are more likely to enjoy the competition while younger players will benefit more from participating in the BACT run program (Aussie Hoops) to develop their ball skills first.

Competition structure and age groups

The winter season is the main basketball season and runs from March to the end of September.

There are 5 junior age groups competing in Basketball ACT competitions – under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 19. What age group you play in is determined by what age you turn in the year of the competition (regardless of whether you actually reach that age in the competition itself).

Year of birth Age at the end of 2024 Age group for winter 2024
2015 or later 9 or younger Under 10
2013, 2014 10-11 Under 12
2011, 2012 12-13 Under 14
2009, 2010 14-15 Under 16
2006, 2007, 2008 16-18 Under 19

Under 10s is non-competitive (no scoring, no ladder) but there are still 2-3 divisions to cater for different ages and abilities.

Under 12-19s are then broken down into grades (divisions 1-6). There is also a separate JPL (junior premier league) run on Friday nights for elite level players.
