FAQS

Summer 2023 Registrations – FAQs
  • When will summer registrations open (and close)?

Registrations opened on 16 August 2024 and closed on 23 September 2024.

  • What if I miss the deadline to register?

Just contact us on info@southerncrossbasketball.net and let us know your name, gender, year of birth and basketball experience.  If there is a vacancy in a suitable team, you’ll be able to register late. If the teams are full, we can place you on a wait list and will contact you if a vacancy opens up during the season.

  • What changes have been introduced for the summer 24-25 competition?

The summer 24-25 junior season (Div 1-6) is now being lengthened and extended into term 1 of 2025. There is no JPL or summer slam competition over summer 2024. Instead, there is a summer open (pre-JPL) competition.  The summer open comp allows clubs to work out whether they have a JPL standard team for winter.  Because of this, BACT have imposed new transfer restrictions on players who have played summer open with a particular club.  Those players won’t be able to transfer to another club JPL team for winter 2025 without an exemption from BACT. BACT will also be looking at team lists for summer open teams before accepting team nominations or approving transfers.

With the junior summer season now extending into 2025, the age groups will now change in summer 24-25 (rather than the following winter).  For players born in 2006, that means they’ll age out or juniors and won’t be eligible for the upcoming junior summer (or summer open) competitions.

  • What are the season dates?

The junior summer 24-25 competition is a 12-round competition with 2 weeks of finals. It will start on 26-27 October 2024, end with a Grand final on March 22-23, 2025 and include a break for the Christmas school holidays. There are no grading rounds in the competition but if a team is obviously in the wrong grade, they can be moved after round 3.

The under 10 competition start dates are the same as the junior summer competition but because it is non-competitive, it doesn’t have the finals rounds and will end on March 2 2025.

The summer open (pre-JPL) competition has slightly different season dates to the other junior competitions. It is a 10 round competition starting on October 25 2024, ending with a Grand final on 28 February 2025 and including a break for the school Christmas holidays.

For all junior competitions, there are no games on long weekends or during school holidays.

  • What time commitment is involved each week?

For junior competitions, there is a 1 hour mid-week training session generally at Tuggeranong stadium followed by a game on the weekend. Under 12s and 16s play on a Saturday. Under 10s, 14s and 19s play on a Sunday.  All games are 40 minutes long (running clock) with 4 quarters of 10 minutes and 1-2 minute breaks between each quarter.

For junior open competitions (the premier level comp), there is a 90-minute mid-week training session per week and a Friday night game.  Those games also have 4 quarters and breaks of 1-2 minutes between quarters but games are generally longer than the normal junior competition as they are fully timed.

  • What are the age groups for the summer 24-25 season?

There are 5 junior age groups competing in Basketball ACT competitions – under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16 and under 19.

What age group you play in is determined by what age you turn in the year of the competition (regardless of whether you actually reach that age in the competition itself).

This means that it’s your year of birth that determines your age group as indicated in the table below:

Year of birth Age at the end of 2025 Age group for summer 24-25
2016 (or later) 9 or younger Under 10
    2015-2014 10-11 Under 12
    2013-2012 12-13 Under 14
    2011-2010 14-15 Under 16
    2009, 2008, 2007 16-18 Under 19

  • Are there grades in basketball for different skill levels?

Under 10s is non-competitive (no scoring, no ladder) but there are still grades (divisions 1-3) to cater for different ages and abilities.

Under 12-19s are also broken down into grades (divisions 1-6). There is also a separate Junior Premier League competition run over winter for elite players.  In the summer season, there is a club run summer open competition which is the same level as JPL (so pre-JPL) and allows clubs to work out whether they have a JPL standard team for winter.

  • What size basketball do I need?

The size of ball you need depends on your age group and gender. The rules are set out in the BACT competition by-laws (section 7.3) and are summarised in the table below.

    Age Group Boys Girls
    Under 10s 5 5
    Under 12s 5 5
    Under 14s 6 6
    Under 16s 7 6
    Under 19s 7 6
  • When will I know which team I am in?

Junior registrations closed on 23 September 2024. Teams will be finalised sometime after this with team lists sent out to club members as soon as they are available.

  • When and where do teams train?

Teams currently train at Tuggeranong stadium between Monday and Thursday nights. Training sessions are 1 hour long. They can start as early as 4:30pm and finish as late as 7pm (for older teams)

It is difficult to provide exact training times as this depends on the team that you are selected for. If there is a commitment that you need to work around, you should email us at info@southerncrossbasketball.net.

Please also note that game and training times are not finalised until closer to the start of the season.  Although we try and make game and training times as consistent as possible, there is a fair bit of juggling to accommodate all teams with limited court availability in Canberra.

  • When do you start training?

Summer training will start in the first week of term 4 with the first game at the end of week 2. Once you are registered, you’ll be on our mailing list and we will send an email closer to the start of the season to remind you.

  • Where and what times are games held?

Junior competition games are held on a weekend and are generally played at either Tuggeranong or Belconnen Stadiums (with overflow venues at Radford, Daramalan and Marist).   Under 10s, 14s and 19s (all grades) play on a Sunday and under 12s and 16 (all grades) play on Saturdays.  The summer open (pre-JPL) games are played on Friday night.

  • How much does it cost to register in the junior and summer open competitions?

Basketball fees have 3 components – a BACT fee, a BA (Game development levy) and a Club fee. The last fee is the only fee that comes to the Club and pays your team registration, training costs and Club admin.

Age group/grade BACT fee BA (GDL) fee Club fee
    Under 10s $60 $5.61 $260
    Under 12s-19s div 1-6 $60 $5.61 $300
    summer open $60 $5.61 $370
  • Are there payment plans available?

PlayHQ now allows you to pay in 4 instalments when you register on-line.

Alternatively, the Club allows you to pay the club fees in smaller fortnightly instalments. This is done by setting up a direct debit payment schedule. Please contact the Treasurer on treasurer@southerncrossbasketball.net to see if you qualify for one. Note that the payment plan only covers the club fees. The BACT fee ($65.61) covers insurance and has to be paid upfront when you register.

  • How do I register?

Registration is an on-line process through the PlayHQ platform where you register and pay. There will be a link from the TSC basketball registration page on our web site and a post on our Facebook.

Returning players will also receive a link through mail chimp but please be aware that these emails can sometimes end up in spam and you’ll need to check the website if you don’t receive a link.

If you have been selected for the summer open (pre-JPL) competition, you’ll be sent a separate link and you should not register for the normal junior competition.

If you need a payment plan to pay the fees, we can offer automated direct debit instalments set up through your bank account. Please contact the Treasurer by email to see if you qualify for one (treasurer@southerncrossbasketball.net).

  • Can I request to play in a team with friends?

Yes. There is a question on the on-line registration form which asks if you have any friend requests and we try and meet these where possible.

  • Are there any selection trials for summer 24-25?

For the normal junior competition, we won’t be running selection trials. Players will instead be placed in teams based on their experience, coach comments and where possible, friend requests.  Selectors will also be attending games in term 3 to assess a player’s ability. New players will be placed in an entry level team (unless they are transferring from another club).

For under 10 players, they will be placed into teams after the first trainings.

All players that register before the closing date will be placed in a team. After that, players can only register if there is a vacancy.

  • My child has never played basketball before – is this a problem?

No, not at all. You can register to play in any age group even if you’ve never played before.  Our emphasis is on teaching fundamental skills at every level and we have a wide range of teams for all standards of players.

  • How young can a child start playing basketball?

It will depend on the child. There is no lower age limit to play but most kids would be ready to play once they are 8 years or older.  If they are not quite ready to play in a team, we recommend that they register with the BACT run program Aussie Hoops which is run every term in a number of locations around Canberra including Tuggeranong Stadium. This is a great way of building skills until they are confident enough to play.

  • What if I am joining from another club?

If you are a transferring player, welcome.  It’s great to have you join our Club. We just need you to contact us before registering on-line by emailing:

    info@southerncrossbasketball.net

The automated Play HQ system is likely to make you submit a transfer request before you can register. If we know the registration is coming, we can hold a place for you in a team while your transfer is being processed.

If the Play HQ system doesn’t recognise you need a transfer, we’ll need to submit a manual transfer on your behalf. You can still register but won’t be able to play until the transfer is approved.

The most common reason for transfers to be rejected is if a player still owes money to their previous club.  For that reason, it’s worth double checking with the previous club that all your debts have been cleared before applying for a transfer.  I am sure they would also appreciate (as we would) knowing that a player is moving to another club.

  • Do I need a uniform and how do I organise it?

Under 10 players have a uniform top provided. They just need to supply their own plain black shorts. These can be any style but must NOT have any pockets or zips.

Under 12-19 players need to purchase a uniform top ($50) and club shorts ($30).

We are expecting a bulk order for uniforms to arrive around 11 October 2024 and will organise uniform fitting sessions soon after this.  Details for these sessions will be announced by email and through Facebook

Outside these sessions, please contact our uniform officer to organise a uniform.

    uniforms@southerncrossbasketball.net.

  • Can I re-use my uniform from last season?

Yes.  If you have purchased a uniform, it can be used over multiple seasons. If the uniform has been loaned (for example temporary players, under 10 players and sponsored JPL uniforms), it needs to be returned at the end of the season and a new uniform organised for the following season.
